On January 15, 1908, a group of women at Howard University followed the inspiration of a fellow student. Ethel Hedgeman Lyle initiated the movement of Greek letter sororities among African-American women in America.

From this nucleus Alpha Kappa Alpha has grown to a membership
of over 113,000 college women affiliated with undergraduate and alumnae chapters located in leading colleges, universities, and cities throughout the nation and outside the continental United States.

The purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is "to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women, to maintain a progressive interest in college life, and to be of service to all mankind."

The motto of Alpha Kappa Alpha is "by merit and by culture"

Alpha Kappa Alpha's colors are Apple Green and Salmon Pink
